Effect of Carbon Tetrachloride on the Potassium Permeability in the Rabbit Erythrocyte Membrane

Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of carbon tetrachloride (CCI4,) on the potassium per¡©meability of the rabbit erythrocyte membrane. The results thus obtained are summarized as follows.
1. CCI4, causes the efflux of K+ across the rabbit erythrocyte membrane.
2. Osmotic resistance of CCI4, treated erythrocyte is diminished. This diminution of osmotic resistance is more pronounced by increasing concentration of CCI4, and longer incubation time. Cysteine or gluta¡© thione prevents diminution of osmotic resistance of erythrocytes induced by CCI4, poisoning.
3. Glutathione markedly inhibits while cysteine has little influence on K+ efflux induced by CCI4,.
4. The addition of EDTA and EGTA in the incubation medium fail to protect against the K+ efflux induced by CCI4,.
5. PCMB and DNFB augment markedly on K+ outflux by CCl4,.
6. Intraperitoneal administration of CCI4, to the rabbit in the doses of 1.0 ml/kg body wt. results in slight efflux of K+ across the rabbit erythrocyte membrane throughout a week after CC14 injection.
